If you use linux, then I would recommend these applications/patches...
Selinux which is a patch of the linux kernel that is more secure
Firestarter which is my preferred linux firewall
Bastille which is a linux hardening tool
Selinux mls policy
Using separate partitions for your usr and temp diretories
